Leading Change for Better Health Through Friendship

Jun 21, 2022

Palm Health Foundation annually provides sponsorships to local organizations engaged in work that aligns with our mission and advances a culture of health in Palm Beach County. We support a program called Camp Wings of Friendship, presented by The Friendship Journey, a free virtual summer camp for teens and adults of all abilities.

Our support this year helped campers like Lexy, a 28-year-old with Down Syndrome and type 1 Diabetes, enjoy enriching experiences, increase social skills, make lasting memories, and connect with new friends.

Lexy works hard to manage her diabetes, and one day shared about the challenges she has faced throughout her life with her fellow campers. This was the first time she had expressed herself in such a vulnerable way, and she was celebrated and encouraged by her counselors and fellow campers. Through her camp connections, Lexy has built more confidence and realizes that she’s not alone in her struggles.

Lexy’s caregivers shared that Camp Wings of Friendship has made a huge difference in her quality of life. She has since connected with some of her new friends in person and continues to thrive.

The Palm Health Foundation board and staff are grateful for the opportunity to support The Friendship Journey. Our commitment to building a culture of health in our community includes supporting organizations and initiatives that promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles and tackle the social, economic and environmental factors that impact health for our neighbors. The Friendship Journey is building a community of strong social and emotional support for all who engage in their programs and are a wonderful partner in health advancement.

Palm Health Foundation behavioral health scholarship recipient Beatriz Moreno remembers the first time she was made aware that she was a first-generation student. “I was applying to colleges in my junior year of high school with my high school counselor and I had to answer what level of education my parents had completed,” said the Argentine American scholar. “As I sat there, I realized that neither of my parents had completed a college degree in the United States. I was the eldest child to start that journey.” It was the beginning of her educational pursuit to combine her interest in behavioral health with her passion for helping people from Hispanic cultures. “Stigma surrounds mental health in the Hispanic community,” she said. “It prevents people from receiving the proper supports, especially when acculturating to a new way of life. And it affects their children.”
