Giving Tuesday 2023

Nov 28, 2023

Whose memory will you honor? Whose future will you change?

Special gifts mark the most meaningful moments and memories of our lives. For Carrie Browne and her family, the gift of The Madeline and Delaney Scholarship Fund at Palm Health Foundation is a commemoration of their precious twins who would have turned 21 this year. It is also a legacy to create a new generation of nurses to care for and comfort patients and families in the same way the Brownes’ experienced in their time of need.

This Giving Tuesday, we are honoring the Brownes and their new fund by announcing our gift to you. Palm Health Foundation will provide a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $10,000 to create your own nursing scholarship fund, or to double the gift you make to existing fund, between November 28, 2023, and January 31, 2024. Honor or memorialize someone special—maybe it’s you—and have their legacy live on through the nurses who will always be remembered, too.

The Brownes have never forgotten the nurses who cared for Madeline and Delaney. And now aspiring nurses will carry their daughters’ names with them throughout their careers, giving back from a gift that started on Giving Tuesday.

Our Story

On July 10th, 2003, our family was blessed with the arrival of our twins, Madeline and Delaney. Born prematurely and diagnosed with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, their brief yet impactful time with us has left an indelible mark on our hearts.

In the NICU, the nurses became our unwavering support. With their kindness, professionalism, and honesty, they celebrated each milestone with Madeline and Delaney, embodying empathy and compassion through every challenge.

During those precious days, we came to understand their distinct personalities. Madeline, serene and delicate, was soothed by a nurse-crafted waterbed made from an IV bag. Gentle whispers were the key to keeping her oxygen levels stable. Delaney, our vibrant firecracker, responded best to strong, confident tones, especially during medical procedures.

Our family's steadfast support was equally powerful. They surrounded us with strength and love, sharing in our journey. The girls, inheriting my red hair and Donnie's adorable toes, forever symbolize the deep bond of our family.

Though Madeline and Delaney couldn't stay with us, they forever remain a cherished part of our family's story. We honor their memory each year, celebrating their lives with a special cake chosen by their brothers, Jake and Nicolas. This year, commemorating their 21st birthday, we are honoring them uniquely through The Madeline and Delaney Scholarship Fund.

In my role at Palm Health Foundation, I see the impact that community support and funding can have. This fund, inspired by the care we received, not only honors our daughters but also supports aspiring nurses, reflecting the compassion and dedication that were our solace in a time of profound need.

By contributing to this scholarship fund, you are not only providing financial support to future nurses, you are also helping to extend Madeline and Delaney's influence far beyond their brief time with us, transforming our grief into a legacy that continues to resonate through the lives of others.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Carrie, Donnie, Jake & Nicolas

Palm Health Foundation behavioral health scholarship recipient Beatriz Moreno remembers the first time she was made aware that she was a first-generation student. “I was applying to colleges in my junior year of high school with my high school counselor and I had to answer what level of education my parents had completed,” said the Argentine American scholar. “As I sat there, I realized that neither of my parents had completed a college degree in the United States. I was the eldest child to start that journey.” It was the beginning of her educational pursuit to combine her interest in behavioral health with her passion for helping people from Hispanic cultures. “Stigma surrounds mental health in the Hispanic community,” she said. “It prevents people from receiving the proper supports, especially when acculturating to a new way of life. And it affects their children.”
