Creating a Scholarship Legacy

The Koehn Family Fund at Palm Health Foundation

For Christine and Rich Koehn, the new Koehn Family Fund for behavioral health and nursing scholarships at Palm Health Foundation weaves together the many threads of their lives to become a legacy of health and healing.

Their daughter is a nurse. So is Christine’s mom.

Christine was the first in her family to complete college thanks to scholarships and sacrifices her family made. She attained her PhD in psychology and went on to serve as a leader in the social impact sector focused on issues such as access to health care. Rich is a former law enforcement professional who had a passion for aiding the people he encountered needing mental health support, always asking, “how can I help you?”

Helping others is a central philosophy of their lives, and one that will be carried forward through their scholarship fund at Palm Health Foundation. “Chris came to me with an idea of a lasting legacy for our family and I thought it was a terrific idea,” said Rich. Christine added, “It’s a way to give back, knowing we’ll help many people going forward. While we’re able to touch many lives now, our goal is to endow the fund, so that we can touch many more in the future.”

Unlike many other foundations, Palm Health Foundation does not require a large lump sum to endow a scholarship. Donors can contribute toward their named fund over time until it reaches the endowment level.

Another important benefit for Christine and Rich is participating in the scholarship application review process and getting to know their scholars. “Palm Health Foundation has made creating a scholarship fund more personally meaningful than elsewhere,” said Christine. “We’re pleased to support these students who are passionate about pursuing their profession but have no other way to afford it. If it weren’t for scholarships, I couldn’t have reached my educational goals. I appreciate how much of a difference scholarships can make in someone’s life.”

Looking to what their gift means for the future of health care in Palm Beach County, Christine and Rich see how creating a pipeline of professionals in the behavioral health and nursing fields—both experiencing significant shortages—will help their community and someday themselves.

“We know that there aren’t enough behavioral health and nursing professionals in the field. After hearing the scholars’ stories of the financial barriers they face and the heart they want to give, we knew we wanted to help.”

Rich added, “We are blessed to have this opportunity to endow a scholarship that will help so many people and live in perpetuity.”

Palm Health Foundation behavioral health scholarship recipient Beatriz Moreno remembers the first time she was made aware that she was a first-generation student. “I was applying to colleges in my junior year of high school with my high school counselor and I had to answer what level of education my parents had completed,” said the Argentine American scholar. “As I sat there, I realized that neither of my parents had completed a college degree in the United States. I was the eldest child to start that journey.” It was the beginning of her educational pursuit to combine her interest in behavioral health with her passion for helping people from Hispanic cultures. “Stigma surrounds mental health in the Hispanic community,” she said. “It prevents people from receiving the proper supports, especially when acculturating to a new way of life. And it affects their children.”
