An Angel Child’s Legacy – Strengthening the Health Professions

Palm Health Foundation Philanthropy Committee member and former board chair Denise Bober established The Sutton Kailey Nursing Advancement Fund to support quality nursing care in our community.

This year, Denise and her family selected two passionate nurses to receive scholarships that will support their further education and skill development, ultimately leading to excellent care for local patients.

Denise’s fund is named in honor of her twin granddaughters, Sutton and Kailey. The girls were born at 24 weeks, weighing only 1.2 lbs and 1.1 lbs. Kailey shined her presence on this earth for 24 hours. Baby Sutton remained brave and strong, surviving heart surgery and spending 111 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Now a thriving 8-year-old, Sutton understands her family’s gratitude for the nurses who diligently cared for her during her long hospital stay and honors her sister alongside her parents and grandmother through
The Sutton Kailey Nursing Advancement Fund.

After selecting two dedicated nursing professionals to receive their family’s scholarship, Denise, her children, and her granddaughter were able to meet them in person – a touching moment for all.

“To this day, we are overwhelmed with gratitude and want to ensure that other families have the same nurturing, quality care when they need it most.” – Denise Bober

Palm Health Foundation behavioral health scholarship recipient Beatriz Moreno remembers the first time she was made aware that she was a first-generation student. “I was applying to colleges in my junior year of high school with my high school counselor and I had to answer what level of education my parents had completed,” said the Argentine American scholar. “As I sat there, I realized that neither of my parents had completed a college degree in the United States. I was the eldest child to start that journey.” It was the beginning of her educational pursuit to combine her interest in behavioral health with her passion for helping people from Hispanic cultures. “Stigma surrounds mental health in the Hispanic community,” she said. “It prevents people from receiving the proper supports, especially when acculturating to a new way of life. And it affects their children.”
