A Passion for Youth and Mental Health

Your Year-End Gift Will Make Someone’s Dream Come True

There is a little known but alarming cause of death among youth with type 1 diabetes: suicide. According to the American Diabetes Association, adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes are 61% more likely to say they feel suicidal than those without diabetes, and up to 7% of deaths in individuals with type 1 diabetes are a result of suicide.

Ashley Robertson, a West Palm Beach resident who lives with type 1 diabetes, saw the toll the disease can take on youth mental health when she was a volunteer at Florida Diabetes Camp. It was where she was first inspired to pursue a nursing career combining mental health with care for chronic conditions.

Now, with the support of a scholarship from Palm Health Foundation, she is studying for her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Psychiatric Mental Health.

“With Palm Health Foundation’s support, I am pursuing my dream to work with children and adolescents with chronic conditions to hopefully make an impact on their lives.”

 - Ashley Robertson, Palm Health Foundation Scholar

Palm Health Foundation behavioral health scholarship recipient Beatriz Moreno remembers the first time she was made aware that she was a first-generation student. “I was applying to colleges in my junior year of high school with my high school counselor and I had to answer what level of education my parents had completed,” said the Argentine American scholar. “As I sat there, I realized that neither of my parents had completed a college degree in the United States. I was the eldest child to start that journey.” It was the beginning of her educational pursuit to combine her interest in behavioral health with her passion for helping people from Hispanic cultures. “Stigma surrounds mental health in the Hispanic community,” she said. “It prevents people from receiving the proper supports, especially when acculturating to a new way of life. And it affects their children.”
